Vacuum Cleaner
Product Design
14 week project
ACUUM is a minimalist cordless vacuum that maintains your home clean every day. Its sculpture-like design encourages users to keep it out of the closet and display it in their living spaces. This keeps it ready for quick cleaning, as a constant visual nudge encouraging users to take small steps towards a healthy lifestyle.
Upon interviewing eight Generation Y professionals living in the city, I discovered that they all tend to put off floor cleaning. They think they need to clean more often, but they can’t do it due to their busy lifestyle.
Most of the vacuum cleaners in the market are designed for typical large American houses. They do not match with the target users' small living spaces. They complain about these big, heavy, and over-powered bodies but they use them due to a lack of alternatives.
A user persona was created to build a clearer image of the users. The persona represented the results of the research and user interviews.
I took apart an existing vacuum cleaner to learn about the mechanics within before starting to style the design.
Starting quick sketches with small scale mockups, then moving to actual size models to check usability and inner mechanism.
Test the size with a full scale model
Design both inside and outside mechanism for fitting the every component work.
Using Solidworks to render the final design.
The colors are picked to fit with users’ living space. The selection offers you enjoyment selecting colors as you do for your furniture.
